Artist

Felix, 1972

Felix was born in 1972. He decided to dedicate himself to art from a very young age, influenced by his brother, who was an artist. This connection also allowed him, early on, to come into contact with and explore the work of the circle of artists in his community. Felix is grateful for the support he has received from his family and community in his artistic development, noting that painting was not only a common practice in his home but also among his neighbors, which has always been a source of motivation along his path.

Felix explains that the main challenge of making a living from art is that sales are tied to tourism cycles, so when tourism is low, his income decreases. Because of this, he combines his work as a painter with that of a musician and sculptor, and also takes on other jobs depending on the season, such as working as a car mechanic, for which he received technical training. Felix mentions that he would like to have a more stable source of income connected to art and to be able to generate greater earnings from his craft.

The artist emphasizes that those who acquire his works not only support him and his family but also contribute to the well-being of his community, where it is culturally common for people to support one another.

Through his art, Felix celebrates cultural practices such as dance and the caregiving tasks performed by rural women, as well as the folklore of Indigenous peoples like the Maasai. Likewise, his art reflects the world in which artists in Tanzania live, a world closely linked to tourist safaris in national parks and the observation of Africa’s great wildlife species.
